Project Description
Smithlands Barn started life as a humble Atcost Barn serving the agricultural needs of Smithlands Farm. When the barn became redundant in 2015 the farm owners Mike and Jane Brashill contacted Parker Dann to enquire if their barn might satisfy the Government’s recently introduced Class MB (now Class Q) which permitted redundant barns to be converted to dwellings subject to the criteria as set out in the Use Class.
After a visit to the barn and discussion with Mike and Jane it was agreed that the barn was a suitable candidate to be considered under Class MB and an application was duly prepared with the assistance of 3D Architecture who prepared the plans.
The conversion, which was carried out almost entirely by Mike Brashill himself, included a number of highly sustainable energy saving materials including triple glazed windows, super insulation and energy efficient lighting.
Once the works had been completed Parker Dann submitted Smithlands Barn to the 2017 Sussex Heritage awards under the small dwelling category. The judging panel carried out a site visit and concluded that the works to the barn amounted to an outstanding conversion of a humble barn to a residential dwelling and awarded Smithlands Barn the top award in this category.
